  • Overview

    Mountain Warehouse is an outdoor clothing & equipment retailer; we currently trade from over 300 stores including 80 stores across Europe & North America.  We also have a significant e-commerce site and trade through a variety of online marketplaces (Amazon & eBay) in the UK and Internationally.


    As part of a Reporting team of 7 you will play an important role in the provision of timely and accurate management information to a wide-ranging audience across the business.

    Supported by an Assistant Management Accountant, you will have ownership of our retail costs which includes payroll, property, controllable costs and store capital expenditure

    What you'll be doing

    Month end

    • Prepare and post period end journal entries relating to the retail P&L ensuring accurate recording of all costs in a timely manner.
    • Complete robust balance sheet reconciliations to agreed deadlines with all reconciling items investigated and resolved promptly.
    • Deliver timely and accurate monthly management information to the Retail Operations team with commentary that compares performance to budget and prior year and with explanation of trends.
    • Business partnering with the Retail Operations team, holding monthly review meetings with the key budget holders to discuss the result and provide support for any queries they have.
    • Identify drivers of overspend, prepare ad hoc analysis and develop recommendations to reduce finance risk.
    • Preparation of periodic capital expenditure reporting for inclusion in the board pack with analysis against budget and prior year that demonstrates a thorough understanding of capital expenditure across the Mountain Warehouse estate.
    • Develop and evolve month end reporting and analysis to better communicate financial performance to key stakeholders.
    • Support the calculation of and settlement of turnover rent invoices.

    Compliance and Controls

    • Significant involvement in year-end process, preparation of deliverables for the audit and key contact for the auditors during the audit process.
    • Preparation and filing of VAT returns and Intrastat overseas.
    • Support the preparation of statutory statistical filings in the UK and overseas.
    • Support the development of a robust control environment by continuously identifying opportunities to improve financial systems and processes and by implementing these changes.


    • Training and development of junior members of our finance team.
    • Develop stakeholder relationships across the Retail Operations and Finance functions.
    • Ongoing non-business as usual project work within the finance team as and when required. This is expected to include preparations for the new leases standard.

    We would love to meet someone with

    • Qualified accountant with up to two years PQE working in a large company.
    • Retail experience preferable but not essential.
    • Enthusiastic, self-motivated and a desire to drive improvements in a fast-paced and entrepreneurial business.
    • Excellent numeracy and IT skills including advanced Excel with a strong attention to detail.
